The Impact pathways of fieldlabs

Not categorized

Fieldlab development in the Netherlands is currently at a critical juncture. While initial outcomes are promising—often yielding innovative solutions—the broader economic value of fieldlabs remains mixed, and systematic evidence of their societal impact is still lacking. That’s why one of the key outcomes of the Fieldlabs@Scale project is the development of a tool to better understand the value generated by fieldlabs.

In March 2025, Hannah Fults and Fleur Deken (VU) hosted a workshop for TU Delft fieldlabs at The Green Village. The session began with a short lecture exploring how fieldlabs tend to grow organically—gradually building up experimentation infrastructure over time. Participants were then invited to reflect on their core activities and how these generate different types of value and impact.

During the breakout session, discussions focused on the various forms of infrastructure needed to support these core activities and enable lasting impact. The workshop offered a valuable moment of reflection for the TU Delft fieldlabs: to take stock of their development, articulate the kinds of value they generate, and begin shaping strategies for future growth and societal contribution.
